Ethnicity Effects in Relative Pitch Learning

چکیده

Higher rates of Absolute Pitch among East Asian musicians has garnered considerable research interest for it position to uncover relative contributions of genetic and environmental factors such as musical training and tone-language knowledge. In three studies with non-musicians (n=134) on learning Relative Pitch (the relation between tones), we establish similar ethnicity effects. East Asians consistently outperformed other participants in relative pitch tasks regardless of tone-language knowledge; no difference was observed in a ‘relative rhythm’ control task. Results suggest genetic and environmental factors in identifying musical intervals.

Ethnicity effects in relative pitch.

Absolute pitch (AP), the rare ability to identify a musical pitch, occurs at a higher rate among East Asian musicians. This has stimulated considerable research on the comparative contributions of genetic and environmental factors. Two studies examined whether a similar ethnicity effect is found for relative pitch (RP), identifying the distance or interval between two tones. Nonmusicians (n = 1...

Changing the tune: the structure of the input affects infants' use of absolute and relative pitch.

Sequences of notes contain several different types of pitch cues, including both absolute and relative pitch information. What factors determine which of these cues are used when learning about tone sequences? Previous research suggests that infants tend to preferentially process absolute pitch patterns in continuous tone sequences, while other types of input elicit relative pitch use by infant...

Absolute Pitch and Tone Language: Two New Studies

Two new studies provide evidence in favor of the hypothesis that absolute pitch is strongly influenced by a speech-related critical period. The first study examined the prevalence of absolute pitch among students in at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music, as a function of age of onset of musical training, ethnicity, fluency in speaking a tone language, and country o...

Relationships between Pitch-Matching and Grade Level, Gender, Ethnicity, and Classroom Teachers’ Use of Music in Grades K-3,

The purpose of this study was to examine relationships between pitch-matching and grade level, sex, ethnicity, and classroom teachers’ use of music among K-3 students (N = 289) taught by the same general music teacher. Portions of the data from a pitchmatching exercise that functioned as the music teacher’s roll-taking procedure during the 2005-06 school year were treated as preand posttests. T...

Hydrodynamic damped pitch motion of tension leg platforms

Because of fluctuation in leg tension, pitch motion is very effective fatigue and life safety of leg elements in tension leg structures (TLSs). In this paper an exact solution for pitch vibration of a TLS interacting with ocean wave is presented. The legs of TLP are considered as elastic springs. The flow is assumed to be irrotational and single-valued velocity potentials are defined. The effec...
